This weekend I judged at the 25th Annual Nova Titan Invitational in Davie, Florida. My daughter competed in Congressional Debate and took 4th place. The top six finishers in her event earned a bid to the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky.
I couldn’t be prouder. But what stayed with me was the whole room.
What is Public Forum debate?
I judged Public Forum. Two teams of two argue a real policy question, and the topic stays the same for two months. This month’s topic: Should the United States pass a moratorium on hyperscale data center construction?
The students don’t pick a side. They have to be ready to argue both. They research hard, study the other team’s best points, and answer them on the spot.
Why does this matter?
These are teenagers debating AI, energy, and infrastructure. That tells you how big this issue has become. It will shape the world they inherit, and the jobs, businesses, and retirements of the adults reading this.
I walked in to help. I walked out with more faith in humanity. These kids were sharp, prepared, and respectful, even when they disagreed.
Should your child try debate?
If you have a middle or high school student, I’d encourage it. Debate builds research, public speaking, and clear thinking. It also teaches kids to listen to the other side before they answer. Those skills help in any career.
- Ask your child’s school if they have a speech and debate team.
- Find schools near you: NSDA school map
- Palm Beach and Martin County leagues: PBCFL
- No team at your school? Here’s how to start one.
Could you judge?
Tournaments need judges, and many can’t run without them. You don’t need debate experience. A parent, a grandparent, a business owner, or a retiree can do it. The training is free and short.
One weekend will change how you see the next generation.
What does this mean for your money?
AI is going to affect your life, your job, and your business. Planning your finances around that change is one of the most important conversations you can have right now. If you want to talk it through, reach out. I’d welcome the conversation.
